Bolivia Tours & Trips
Spooky witches markets, spectacular salt flats, and shimmering lakes. Discover Bolivia with On The Go Tours.
Bolivia is a land of superlatives - it's South America's highest, most isolated, and rugged nation and boasts some of the world's driest, saltiest, and swampiest natural landscapes. Add to this one of the largest indigenous populations on the continent and you have an adventurous traveller's paradise. It's also a surprising food destination with a varied range of dishes. Delights of Bolivian cuisine include everything from mouthwatering dark chocolate and chorizo sandwiches, to the somewhat unusual llama tenderloin and pacay, a fruit that tastes like ice cream.
Visit La Paz, one of the world's highest capitals and spend time in world-class museums, haggle in traditional street markets, marvel at the stunning views over the city, and meet up with the Aymara Indians as you pass through the Bolivian Highlands. Ride over La Paz in a cable car, cruise Lake Titicaca and admire the amazing scenery of the Andes mountain range. Bolivia is a land of contrast, waiting to be discovered.

Frequently asked questions about our Bolivia travel tours
Will I visit La Paz on my Bolivia tour?
Lofty La Paz is the capital and one of the main highlights for travellers to Bolivia. The majority of our tours take in the city on a half day tour, as well as Lake Titicaca. If you'd like to explore the vast Uyuni Salt Flats, then our 20-day Argentina, Atacama & Andes itinerary is the one for you! Uyuni is home to the world's largest salt flat, which stretches for more than 12,000 square kilometres!
When is the best time to visit Bolivia?
Bolivia's dry season lasts from May - October and is typically considered the best time to visit. Bear in mind that much of Bolivia (including La Paz) is at altitude in the Andes mountains and nights get chilly all year round, so pack plenty of thin layers and some warmer clothing too. Bolivia generally sees little rainfall but if there is a rainy season and a "worst" time to go, then it is probably January - March.
Will I have a tour guide?
Yes. Both our Signature and Handpicked Bolivia tours are fully escorted by an English-speaking tour leader, and you will enjoy the services of specialist tour guides at certain sites.
How big are your tour groups in Bolivia and what is the age of your travellers?
Our Signature small group tours in Bolivia depart with a minimum of 2 travellers and the maximum group size is 16. Our Handpicked tours depart with a minimum of 4 travellers, and the maximum group size is 20.
The average age of our travellers is around 48, though we also welcome lots of people in their 20s and 30s on our holidays, as well as older passengers into their 70s. if you have a sense of adventure and a desire to see the world, then you'll fit right in on our Bolivia group tours!

What sort of transportation do you use?
Airport arrival and departure transfers are included on all of our Bolivia group tours and most relevant transportation is in private vehicles.
Where necessary or practical, we also make use of public transportation including buses, trains and boats on your Bolivia tour. Your tour leader will handle the logistics so you needn't worry about missing the bus or train!
On tours where we travel across multiple countries, some internal flights are also necessary. These are included in the cost of your tour and are clearly labelled on the itinerary for each tour page.

Is Bolivia a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?
According to the 2022 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, Bolivia scores a B- rating for LGBTQ+ traveller safety, ranking 34th out of 203 countries.
Although same sex marriage is not legal, there are broad constitutional and worker protections in place for people of all sexual orientations. Hate crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community are criminalized and 26 - 50% of consulted citizens consider Bolivia a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. There are no legal punishments for same sex relations and most trips for LGBTQ+ travellers to Bolivia are trouble-free.
The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travellers to the country.
Will I get altitude sickness?
If you have a history of altitude sickness, then we recommend speaking to your doctor before you travel on your Bolivia tour. Make sure you take things easy when arriving in La Paz, to allow your body to acclimate.
Can I drink the tap water?
As with most of Latin America, the tap water in Bolivia is not safe for human consumption, even in La Paz, and it can cause stomach upsets. Make sure to stick to bottled and filtered water, including for activities such as brushing your teeth. Avoid ice in your drinks and eating foods such as fresh salads, which may have been washed in unsafe water.
As a solo traveller will I have to pay more to travel to Bolivia?
Solo travellers on our Signature Bolivia tours will need to pay the single supplement as listed on the relevant tour page.

Spectacular Salt Flats
Where Bolivia truly excels is in the surreal landscapes of the Uyuni salt flats and the multi-hued Laguna Colorada. Measuring an area of over 10,000 sq km, the Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat with a harsh beauty that transforms with the sky and offers endless possibilities for perspective-bending photography. As well as salt flats, this region of Bolivia is also home to a number of dazzling mineral lakes, including the red Laguna Colorada that changes from a rusty brown to blood-red in the course of a day.

The Best of Bolivia
From the thin air and dramatic scenery of La Paz, to the breathtaking Uyuni Salt Flats and the highest navigable lake in the world - Titicaca. Bolivia has something for everyone, and these are the places you won't want to leave off your itinerary.

Uyuni Salt Flats
The world's largest salt flats stretch for more than 12,000 square kilometres, a vast expanse of barren white nothingness. If you happen to visit after rainfall, you'll find yourself in a daze as the reflections from the salt make it difficult to determine where the sky ends and the land begins. The red lagoon of Laguna Colorada is also worth a visit.

La Paz
You won't want to over-exert yourself in the sprawling city of La Paz, the world's highest capital. It can take a few days to get used to the thin air, but when you do you will want to head out and explore. Ride a cable car over the city, browse the weird and wonderful wares at the La Paz witches market, and enjoy the city's surprisingly good restaurants and nightlife scene.

Lake Titicaca
Bolivia shares the world's highest navigable lake with Peru, and no visit to the two countries is complete without a boat trip. On the Peruvian side, the reed islands of the Uros are a must-visit, and on the Bolivian side of the lake, you can explore the whitewashed town of Copacabana and the Inca ruins of Isla del Sol.
