Frequently asked questions about our Greece tours
Will I see the Acropolis on your Greece tours?
Yes! All of our Greece trips start in ancient Athens, and they all include a city tour with a visit to the Acropolis.
Your local guide will show you around all of the historic ruins to be seen at the site and will be able to answer any questions you may have. You'll also be able to see the wealth of artefacts in the Acropolis Museum and many other of the Greek capital's ancient monuments.
What do you mean by "semi-independent"?
On the tours which combine Greek mainland-based sightseeing with island cruising, you may notice that the tour is labelled as "semi-independent".
All this means is that for the guided sightseeing in Athens and elsewhere, you will be escorted by a licensed tour guide. On the island-hopping part of your tour, you will be travelling independently, though all of your accommodation and transportation will be arranged for you. This gives you the free time and flexibility to head off and explore or flop down on some of the Greek islands' best beaches - whichever you prefer!
Each of our Greece holidays offers slightly different arrangements to give you plenty of options. So have a read of our online itineraries and get in touch if you have any questions!
When is the best time to visit Greece?
Greece offers travellers a gorgeous Mediterranean climate, so there really isn't a bad time to visit the mainland, though the Greek islands do go into a sort of hibernation over winter. As a general guide, May - September offers the warmest, sunniest weather, with little or no rain.
The peak season in Greece is from July - August. This is when temperatures are hottest, crowds are biggest and prices are highest as it is the school holidays. So if you can avoid these months, we generally recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons from May - June, and September.
You can find out more information with our guide to the best time to visit Greece.
What transport do you use?
In Greece, all transfers and sightseeing will be conducted in modern, air-conditioned vehicles.
Travel between the islands on your Greece tour is either aboard a passenger ferry (ferry tickets are included in the cost of your tour where relevant), or a cruise ship, where you will have a private cabin and included meals, plus many amenities.
The inclusions section for each tour will specify your mode of travel.
How big are the groups on your Greece tours?
The maximum group size on our Greece trips is 45, though groups are often smaller, especially if you are visiting outside of the peak summer months.
Our Greece tours are modular, meaning that more people may join the group midway through the tour and the people you are with on your Athens city tour may not be the same people that you will travel with for the rest of the trip. This also means that the group size can vary during your tour.
Is Greece a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?
According to the 2022 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, Greece scores a C rating for LGBTQ+ traveller safety, ranking 43rd out of 203 countries.
Same sex civil unions or partnerships are legal, and there are worker protections in place for people of all sexual orientations. Hate crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community are criminalized and 26 - 50% of consulted citizens consider Greece a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. There are no legal punishments for same sex relations and most trips for LGBTQ+ travellers to Greece are trouble-free.
The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travellers to the country.
Can I drink the tap water?
This depends on where you are in the country. In the large mainland cities, including Athens, tap water is considered safe to drink.
However, in rural areas and on the Greek islands, we would recommend drinking bottled water to avoid an upset stomach. Bottled water is readily available throughout the country.
What is the current travel advice for Greece?
As a UK-based company, we follow the latest up to date advice from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO). You can see the latest travel advice for Greece here.
Are solo travellers welcome on our Greece tours?
Whilst solo travellers are more than welcome on our Greece tours, we are unfortunately unable to offer room sharing in Greece.
For each tour, there is a single room price which would apply to any solo traveller. Please contact our Reservations team for more information.
In many of our other destinations, we are able to match solo travellers with another person of the same sex on tour. Visit our solo travellers page for more information!
Do you offer pre and post-tour accommodation?
If you'd like to spend a few more days in Athens before or after your Greece tour in order to explore the city at your own pace, then we are more than happy to arrange this for you!
Speak to our Reservations team, who will be able to assist you.
Which Greek islands have the best beaches?
If it's beaches you're after, then you are spoiled for choice in Greece. Santorini offers the unusual, with volcanic black lava beaches.
But if you're after traditional golden sands and crystal clear waters, then we would recommend Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes, Crete, or Zakynthos. These are all great for first-time visitors, whilst the less-well-known Greek islands of Skiathos, Samos, and Ios are great for returners. We visit many of these destinations on our Greek island tours and cruises.
What is Greek cuisine like?
Regional specialties include moussaka (aubergine and lamb casserole), souvlaki (spit-roasted meat), and simple but delicious Greek salad, with feta cheese and olives. Being a country of more than 200 islands, unsurprisingly it isn't hard to find mouthwatering freshly caught fish, especially if you're exploring a Greek island or two!

The Best of Greece
From ancient monuments to sun-kissed islands in the Aegean Sea, Greece has something for everyone. Here are the places in Greece that you really won't want to miss, including the legendary hill-top Acropolis in Athens, the whitewashed villages of Santorini and the blissful beaches of Mykonos.

Athens
The Greek capital is the starting destination for all our trips, the home of the iconic Acropolis. Visitors will also want to explore the pretty Plaka district and take in other highlights such as the Panathenaic Stadium.

Santorini
The most famous Greek island, Santorini is known for its active volcano, an iconic sunset and for the picturesque whitewashed towns of Oia and Fira. Scenic walks, boat trips, and black beaches make it the perfect place to while away a few days.

Meteora
A collection of historic monasteries perched precariously atop towering columns of rock, Meteora has to be seen to be believed. Protected by UNESCO and open to visitors who don't mind a climb, it's a hidden gem you don't want to miss!

Delphi
One of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, the Delphi Sanctuary was thought by the Ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world. A collection of ancient ruins, we visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site on many of our Greece tours.

Mykonos
Known as a great party island, Mykonos is also blessed with some of the best beaches in Greece. Yes, it's home to a vibrant nightlife, but it's also an idyllic place to catch some rays beside the Aegean Sea, which is why we visit on our Greek island-hopping cruises.

Olympia
The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia is steeped in history. Crowned by the Temple of Zeus which once housed one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, today the site is home to a range of important ancient ruins.
