Turkey tour reviews
Scoring an average traveller rating of 4.83 out of 5 based on 6 recent reviews — See All Turkey Reviews
We had a wonderful tour, bit of a hiccup at the airport, as there was no one to collect us, but it was quickly resolved. Both the tour guide and driver of the tour bus were more then competent. The tour guide had an amazing array of knowledge of the area in which we travelled, and the sites and places of interested we visited, he was also able to answer any general information related to Turkey. He managed the group well as it related to time keeping without making us feel rushed, or having time to ourselves. The coach was spacious and comfortable. The hotels in which we stayed were comfortable and well appointed, the dinners and breakfasts had a wide array of options.
Although we had initially booked to go to Croatia in 2020, COVID made that impossible, however our tour to Turkey was a great alternative and we were not disappointed.
Would we use On the Go Tours again, certainly and we will encourage our friends to do the same. ”
Another beautiful trip with On The Go. After having had a great experience with them in Jordan, I decided to book a trip to Turkey with them, and I was not disappointed. The tour was very well organised, it is unbelievable how many things we managed to see in 10 days considering the distance between all the stops in the itinerary. A lot of time was spent on the road, however there were regular breaks every 1.5h with 1 hour stop for lunch. An early start in the morning, but that gave us the chance to go back to the hotels by late afternoon and relax. Their choice of hotels was excellent, most of them had a spa, swimming pools and fitness center. The guide, Metin, was very knowledgeable and his explanations allowed us to have a great sense of the history and the culture of Turkey. Metin also made our journey enjoyable with his funny stories, which made the long drives pass quickly. The main highlight of this trip was Cappadocia and the hot air balloon ride: Cappadocia is unbelievable, it seems like being in a dream. I totally recommend this tour and I would suggest that you spend one or two extra days in Istanbul (maybe one pre-tour and one post-tour) as it is a beautiful city and it is worth spending more time visiting it. Thanks On The Go for another wonderful experience!”
Tour guide Lale was excellent - very knowledgeable and friendly. Would recommend.”
Frequently asked questions about our touring holidays in Turkey
Will I visit Istanbul?
Istanbul is probably Turkey's most popular destination, and you'll be glad to know that all of our Turkey tours (with the exception of our sailing holidays) start in the city formerly known as Constantinople. There's included sightseeing in the city on all Signature group tours, so you won't miss a thing.
You could also add on our 4-day City of Sultans short stay at the beginning or end of your Turkey tour, for even more time to explore Istanbul!
Can I visit Turkey to commemorate ANZAC Day?
The Gallipoli campaign during WWI tragically claimed the lives of many Australians and New Zealanders. We run annual tours to Gallipoli to coincide with the Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove on 25 April.
Our range of tours varies from a 4-day express visit to longer tours including sightseeing in Turkey and nearby Egypt. Browse our ANZAC Day page for more information about these trips.
Do you do any special Turkey trips at Christmas?
Visiting Turkey over Christmas is a fabulous experience, and our 12-day Christmas Turkey tour departs once per year and features a special festive itinerary. Christmas Eve is spent visiting the tomb of St Nicholas and enjoying a group dinner at a hilltop restaurant in Antalya. And we spend Christmas Day exploring the Roman ruins of Perge and Aspendos. We take in all the main sights of the country on this trip too, head to the relevant webpage for more information!
How big are your tour groups and what is the age of your travellers?
On our Signature Turkey small group tours, the maximum group size is 24 but the average is more like 14. You'll travel with like-minded people from a variety of English-speaking countries and ages range from those in their 20s all the way up to people in their 60s and beyond - all with a shared passion for travel! The average age on our tours is around 45.
On our Handpicked Turkey group tours, the maximum group size is 40, but you will still be staying in excellent 4 - 5 star accommodation, and fully escorted by a tour guide.
What is the standard of accommodation on your Turkey trips?
On our Signature and Handpicked Turkey holidays, you'll be staying in good quality accommodation - a mix of 4 and 5-star hotels. We select our hotels based on a wide array of criteria including great location, facilities, and comfort.
You can see an example of the hotels we use on the tour pages for many of our trips. However, please note that we reserve the right to substitute the hotels listed for others of a similar standard.
What is Turkish food like and can I drink the tap water?
The short answer: Turkish food is AMAZING!
Turkish food is renowned around the world. You'll eat plenty of meze and hummus, and the kebabs are nothing like the ones you find in London at 3am! Other famous Turkish dishes include pide, a kind of Turkish pizza, and kofte (meatballs). There's more information about the food in Turkey on our top tips page.
The tap water in Turkey is generally considered safe to drink, so bring a reusable water bottle with you to save money and plastic waste!
When is the best time to visit Turkey?
For this reason, we recommend travelling during spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. If joining one of our sailing holidays, then the warm summer months from June to August are best for topping up that tan! However, the winter season tends to be cheaper and there are fewer tourists, so if you don't mind wrapping up warm then you could consider traveling at this time!

Is Turkey a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?

Can I visit Egypt at the same time as Turkey?
Yes! We know lots of travellers from North America and Oceania love to explore more of Europe, Africa and the Middle East when travelling so far from home. Our 16-day Turkey & Tutankhamun tour includes guided sightseeing in Turkey, before travelling to Cairo in Egypt for touring of the Pyramids of Giza, Aswan and Luxor!
You can also explore some of the Greek islands and ancient Athens with our 14-day Istanbul to Athens group tour.
Can I do a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia?
Whilst we don't include hot air balloon rides on our tours in Turkey, it is an optional activity on all trips visiting Cappadocia. Your Turkey tour guide will be able to advise when this activity takes place, and you can book and pay for the hot air balloon ride locally. You'll get a unique perspective of the beautiful landscape of fairy chimneys and cave cities.

The Best of Turkey
The kind-hearted hospitality of the locals is unlike anywhere else. Whether you're being offered a cup of traditional Turkish tea or chatting about local life and Turkish culture, you'll leave with the fondest memories. And that's not the only thing that stands out about our Turkey trips. From Istanbul's Blue Mosque to the underground cities of Cappadocia, here are some of the country's main highlights, and places you simply can't leave Turkey without visiting.

Istanbul
Gateway to Asia and the starting point for all of our Turkey group tours, Istanbul is the place to be in Turkey. Take in the historical sites and other highlights, from Hagia Sofia to the Blue Mosque, barter at the Grand Bazaar, and don't forget to take to the Bosphorus on a cruise.

Cappadocia
A magical land of fairy chimneys, subterranean churches and underground cities, Cappadocia is a place like no other. Head below ground to take it all in, then hop aboard a hot air balloon and sail serenely over the fairytale landscape for tremendous views.

Pamukkale
Known locally as the Cotton Castles, these calcium formations are unlike anywhere else. Bask in the thermal pools that overlook the stunning cliffs of Pamukkale and walk along the beautiful terraces, then head to the nearby Roman spa town of Hierapolis.

Ephesus
For history buffs, it doesn't get better than Ephesus. These well-preserved Roman ruins are crowned by the extraordinary Library of Celsus, but you will also want to check out the amphitheatre. Imagine the city of old as you stroll amongst marble columns, taking it all in.

Fethiye
There's more to Turkey than cultural sights and history, especially on the Turquoise Coast. Fethiye is home to blissful beaches, gorgeous coastline, and crystal blue water. It's a great option for a beach break, or for taking a cruise on a traditional Turkish gulet.

Troy
Made famous by Greek mythology, the ancient ruins of Troy showcase centuries of history and are worth visiting in their own right. But the replica Trojan Horse towering over the site is another great highlight - especially when you can go inside!
